For the first time ever, Bob Basset presented a collection of masks unified by a common theme. Shown at the Ukrainian Fashion Week, it included leather accessories such as bags, clutch-bags, bracelets, and iPad cases alongside the more familiar Bob Basset masks. Mashrabiya was inspired by Serhii Petrov’s admiration of Arabic culture, and specifically architecture.

Each item in the collection features ornamental floral patterns known as mashrabiya, which is the Arabic term for a kind of carved wood latticework used in windows to both attract the eye and hide what should be hidden from sight.

“As I was studying various details and flourishes, my eye was drawn to floral patterns, which are amazingly beautiful in Arabic culture,” says Serhii Petrov, Bob Basset cofounder. “I think you can find a kind of balance in mashrabiya, make out distinct patterns without beginning or end. That’s what makes them such a delight to study.”
